Welcome to Schafer Rhodesian Ridgebacks home page. Let me tell you a little about the breed. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog from Southern Africa. The breed originated in Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) where the first breed standard was written in 1922 and the Parent club formed by Francis R. Barnes in Bulawayo. These dogs are also known as the "African Lion Hound" or "African Lion Dog" because of their ability to harass a lion and keep it at bay while awaiting their master to make the kill. The Ridgeback's general appearance is of a handsome, strong, muscular and active dog, symmetrical in outline, and capable of great endurance. The Ridgeback's distinguishing feature is the ridge of hair along its back running in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat. Male Ridgebacks are typically 25-27 inches at the withers and weigh approximately 85 lb , however some have been known to reach up to 160 lb. Females tend to be 24-26 inches and approximately 70 lb . Ridgebacks are typically muscular and have a light wheaten to red wheaten coat which should be short, dense, sleek and glossy in appearance. White is acceptable on the chest and toes. Ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent, and gentle. These dogs make great pets and tend to be fairly protective of their owners. Bailey is a beautiful registered two and a half year old female. She is a red wheaten color with dark features around the nose and eyes. Bailey weighs aproximately 80lbs. Her blood lines are as follows: Bailey's first litter of puppies are due July 11, 2007 and will be ready for purchase around the middle of September.
